Welcome!

Welcome to the UCSD Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Program!

The Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship program is based at Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego (RCHSD) and is affiliated with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The fellows spend their clinical time at the Rady Children’s Hospital campus.

The pediatric critical care team consists of 8 attendings, 5 nurse practitioners, and 10 fellows. It is the primary service for all patients admitted to the PICU.

One of the strengths of the UCSD Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship is that our PICU offers a high-volume, high-acuity, diverse clinical experience with exceptional research opportunities. Fellows have an opportunity to care for children with the full range of life-threatening disorders, as well as those recovering from cardiovascular, trauma, transplant, neurosurgical, airway reconstruction, and other major surgeries.

Another aspect of our program that fellows enjoy is an active role in educating residents, as all UCSD pediatric residents rotate through the PICU.  While the fellow’s primary clinical responsibility is management of patients in the PICU, the critical care fellow also serves as an integral part of the trauma, emergency response, and transport teams at Rady Children’s Hospital.

Research options at RCHSD and UCSD are excellent, with opportunities available in both clinical and laboratory settings. Approximately fifty percent of our fellows’ time is devoted to teaching and research. For additional guidance and support, individualized mentorship and a dedicated PICU research nurse are integral to the fellows’ research endeavors.

We wish you the best of luck and hope you enjoy your interviews with our team. You have chosen an incredible field; welcome to our pediatric critical care family!  Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or comments!
